Ambulatory ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM
WHAT IS AN aEEG Test?
AEEG stands for Ambulatory Electroencephalogram. This is a test that records the electrical activity in your brain (brainwaves). AEEG tests can assist with the diagnosis and treatment of a range of conditions including headaches, seizures, fits, fainting and more.
This is a mobile/take home test, designed to record activity up to 72 hours, meaning it can capture brainwaves that occur less infrequently, or at certain times of the day – which may be missed by a standard EEG test.
During The Test
Setup
The initial appointment will take around 60 minutes. Our specialists will fit electrodes that measure brain activity. These electrodes use wires to connect to a device which is HOW LARGE?, this device records your brain activity which we can analyse later.
We’ll go through how the device works, instructions, and ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during your appointment.
Testing
You return home, and go about your normal daily life for 24-72 hours.
During the test, we ask that you keep a diary of what you did at different times in the day, and what symptoms you experienced. We match this information to your recording, to see the cause of any abnormal activity.

Seizures & Symptoms During The Test
The device will automatically record these events, but we ask that you make note of when this occurred if possible.
What’s the difference between an EEG and an Ambulatory eeg?
While both tests are designed to measure and record brain activity, Ambulatory EEG tests are designed to record information for a longer period of time – and can be taken home. EEG’s typically last 30-60 minutes and are performed within the clinic, while an Ambulatory EEG may last up to 72 hours.
Epilepsy brainwaves may only occur every 3-4 hours, meaning they may not be present during a standard EEG. Some conditions may only occur at certain times of day, or during certain activities, and AEEG testing can assist with recording these.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TEST?
The results of the test need to be analysed afterwards and a full report will be sent to the doctor who referred you for the test. The results will not be available to you on the same day.
Please bring a copy of your referral to the appointment. Read our patient information to find out more about AEEG costs & payments and what to expect on the day.
